A
Message from Illinois APCO President Jason Kern
Illinois
APCO Members:
In
November 2009, Chapter Historian David Swan announced he will retire
from volunteer duties as coordinator of the Illinois APCO Historical
Collection at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois effective August
2010. Mr. Swan has dedicated 29 years to this collection since
its inception in 1981. Acting as a liaison between Illinois
APCO and Bradley University, coordinator of student assistants and
proctor of the collection, David has built an extensive network of
articles, pictures, letters, agendas, etc from our Chapter and
others. This collection is available for viewing at Bradley's
Cullom-Davis Library and many articles are searchable using the
chapter's historical collection website www.apcohistory.org.
This
growing collection was the first of its kind and is unique in that
it is the only publicly accessible and permanent assemblage of APCO
history in the world. The Collection is frequently consulted on
behalf of APCO's Headquarters staff, chapters and individual members
to answer questions regarding the Association's heritage. It is
widely recognized as the APCO Association's Historical Collection and
is a great source of pride for the Illinois Chapter. Current
Association and Chapter leadership would like to keep the collection
in Illinois and at Bradley University. In order to accomplish
this, your help is needed.
In
addition to oversight of the collection, this position requires
hiring and training of the student workers; seeking out funding grant
opportunities; coordinating maintenance and purchase of new equipment
used to scan and archive data; assisting APCO staff, members and
public seeking information from the collection; oversight of the
collection's website and general promotion of the collection.
The
Executive Board of Illinois APCO is seeking volunteer(s) that can
continue this important endeavor. The future vision of this
position is someone or a group of dedicated individuals near Peoria
that can coordinate efforts of the students, interact with Bradley
staff, and continue the long standing tradition of archiving and
making APCO's history available to the membership. While it is
preferred that those interested are APCO members, non-members willing
to assist in preserving and enhancing the collection will not be overlooked.
Please
help Illinois APCO maintain this collection and keep it within our
state. You may not be interested, but perhaps you know someone
who is. Feel free to contact me by phone at (847) 926-1124 or
e-mail jkern@ctiyhpil.com
with any interest or questions.
Regards,
Jason
